Puggat - PuggatsWhen trying to make a decision on whether to get a puggat or not, Matt and I soon found that there is very little information about the breed out there. Now that we’ve had our puggat, Roogy, for over two months, we have really seen his personality come alive and learned some things about puggats that nobody told us. So hopefully telling you of our experience with our dog will help you decide whether a puggat is a good match for you as well.

We got Roogy when he was eight weeks old from a dog breeder a few miles from our home. The pups had just been taken away from their mother and were in a new and strange environment, making them deceivingly timid. Even though baby puggats may appear to be shy, they most likely will not stay that way. However, each individual puggat will ultimately have a personality of its own, so keep in mind before you go looking as to what type of dog you are looking for. Our puggat happened to be the only pup that would crawl up to us and check us out. The others were very shy, although they slowly became more playful as they grew more confident with their surroundings.

When we took Roogy home, we were surprised at how quickly he grew comfortable with his surroundings. He didn’t show any fear about his new home, but rather seemed confident. Puggats are very playful! Roogy began playing fetch and returning the object just days after we got him. It was easy to see he enjoys human interaction. He can hardly contain his excitement when someone comes to the door. Puggats are people-friendly, and not so much a guard dog. Another thing we noticed was how rowdy he could be, but not at all aggressive. So if you are looking to get a puggat, know from the start that you are getting a ball of energy, and a lot of laughs too!

House-training is something you should start as soon as you bring your puggat home. Although I have never had the experience of housetraining a dog, I found it to be much easier than I thought. I had to have Roogy in my line of sight almost all the time in order to train him the right way from the start, but he didn’t have many messes that we didn’t catch. He finally got to the point where he would go to the door when he needed out in about a month’s time. And Matt and I are now better trained to looking for clues as to when he needs out. So just like any other dog, puggats will need a little dedication to making sure they get house-trained.

My favorite aspect about having a puggat is their love of cuddling. Ever since the first day we got ours, he has loved to crawl into our laps and go to sleep. I don’t know if it’s the pug in them or what, but they love to tuck themselves in right next to you. And while they’re sleeping is the perfect time to clip their nails, as we’ve learned the hard way. It’s also a fun time to check out your puggat’s teeth and see if it has an under bite, which I have heard can be quite common. One thing I have learned about Roogy is he loves to sleep in late, and he loves it when we let him in our bed. He makes it in every morning, and now he expects it. So don’t spoil your puggat unless you are prepared to pay the consequences, because they have good memory!

One thing we have found our puggat to love is baths. And he needs them! I was never told how much puggats shed. They have nice short hair, but they do shed. If you’re going to wear dark clothes, keep the lint roller around. We haven’t had Roogy long enough to find out what time of year he sheds the most, or if it stops at all, but just know it occurs. Needless to say, baths keep his coat looking shiny and smelling puppy-fresh. And I can tell he can’t wait to jump in when I start running that bath water!

Another great thing about puggats is that they are good listeners…at least most of the time. Matt has definitely got Roogy “whooped”. Matt showed him who’s boss one day and Roogy has listened to him ever since. If he is doing something bad, it just takes a snap of the fingers and a firm “come here” from Matt, and Roogy lays his ears back and pathetically belly-crawls towards Matt’s feet. He doesn’t listen as well to me, but I have my own ways of getting him to come to me, such as “want a treat?” That will send him running from wherever he is. I know, that’s probably not the best way to get his attention, but he was smart enough to pick up on it the first time I said it. That’s just another humorous aspect of having a puggat.

So if you are looking for a small dog that isn’t all fluff, puggats are the perfect way to go. In my opinion, they are the coolest small dog around. They’ll drive you nuts with their spunk, and make you melt with their cuddling. I’m sure we’ve got a lot more to learn about the personality of our puggat, being that he is now only four months old, but we’ll keep you posted.

thank you for sharing your story about your Puggart. There isn’t much, really anything written about the breed. So, that you for sharing. Also, do you know of any website of breeders? I live in Southwest Florida but I am willing to travel to pick up a puppy or adult or have it shipped.
Continue to enjoy your little ball of energy and thank you again!

hi there! got here from jhay’s blog. that doggie is sooo cute! i love dogs but unfortunately, we can’t have dogs in our apartment. can’t wait for the day to move out and get our own house and get a dog! have a nice day! :D

  3. 3 Matt

Hey Michael! That is what we found out when researching Puggats. Puggats are so awesome! I have never had a pug or a rat terrier before. It sure seems like a Puggat is the perfect dog.

We searched through the Big city papers in our area. There was a place in Iowa that had some for sale. There are a few other ones. I will have to look for them again!

Thanks for your website. Like everyone else, there is not much info of the Puggats. I have recently purchased one myself. His name is Harley. I got him when he was 7 wks old. He is now 9 1/2 weeks old. Yes they love to cuddle. He will get in my lap and if it’s nap time, fall right to sleep. Has a lot of energy. I have been crate training and it is going better than I ever thought it would. He pretty much lets me know when he has to go out. Only problem I’m having is the nipping and biting that he loves to do. He has a basket full of different toys (all of which he can get in his mouth) for chewing on. I am very glad I picked him. I had looked at the Buggs, which are Pugs and Boston Terriers but was having no luck finding one local. Just so happens I read the ad from a breeder who had the Puggats. She was calling them Rugs. Again, thanks for the info. With yours being 4 months old, has he gotten much bigger then when you first brought him home?

  5. 5 Matt

He has gotten pretty big. A lot bigger than we thought. I think the last time we weighed him he was 15 pounds.

I have had my puggats, frank and beans, for over 2 years and they are great dogs. Although I do think it depends on how much pug or rat they resemble. Frank is more pug and is more of a cuddle bug and more calm. Beans looks more rat and is way more energetic with barking at strangers, jumping, running and chewing. Frank was a little easier to train then beans, which I chalk up to being more calm and attentive to the training. Other than that they are a great breed for apts, quiet and small. They are about 15 - 20 lbs now. The only thing I wish I could change is the shedding. Bathing helps but I do believe frank being more pug makes him a bigger shedder. Any other questions let me know.

  7. 7 scott

what is the ultimate weight of a puggat? some people are calling them a pocket puggle i didnt think this was true…

  8. 8 Matt

Our Puggat, Roogy, is right at 20 pounds. Roogy is a male alos if that matters to the weight.

  9. 9 Matt

My fiancee and I have had our puggat Belle for about a year and three months now and she is a year and a half old. Although she is a ball of energy she is the sweetist dog imaginable. She loves to meet new people and is great with other dogs, very playful. You have to mention how smart puggats are as well. Belle takes right to learning new things..she knows sit, down, roll over, stay, dance, play dead, say I love you, paw, catch among other things. Sometimes she will hold out for a treat before she preforms though. She also has a mistichivious streak in her, like getting a hold of the toilet paper roll and running, or getting in to the trash. She knows when she is acting up and pretends like she is doing something else when you catch her….I have so much to say but I will keep it at this…Puggats have a ton of energy and can be a handfull, but they also have much love to give as well.

    Just tell me WHY??
The grown one I have seen looks like a fawn colored BAT.
Why not just a pug or rat terrier??
Why mix breeds when you end up with a mutt? Why not adopt some of the small dogs that need homes?

  11. 11 Matt

    Stacey,

They are great dogs! You get the best of both breeds. I do say that ours seems to have more rat terrier though. Pugs have some physical issues with their hips and they have breathing issues.

Mutts make great dogs. You can ask anybody that has had an “oops dog” and they will say it was a great dog. Puggats are just plain old great dogs and I would get one all over again if I had to.

I have nothing against adopting dogs. Becky and I choose to get a puppy that we liked and raise it up from the puppy stage on up. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I agree as well with getting a dog that will suit your lifestyle. If you get a dog that has high energy but you don’t have the time to exhaust that energy you are not only putting yourself in a hard spot, as coming home to a destroyed house, but you are also giving the dog a home that is not suited for their personality. I researched what type of dog I wanted for almost a year to know what was the best dog for me. Pugs are very smart and are on the calmer side. So to mix them with the rat terrier actually gave them less health problems and a little more energy, but not too much that they can’t sit and relax with you. This also decreases the shedding of a pug which is horrible! Also knowing that I was going to be in an apt at the time I knew I needed a smaller dog. Even though I also adopted from the humane center, you can not always find the dog suited for you, which is the most important thing for you and the dog.

  13. 13 Steve

I know where there are some available. Drop an email in you want info. rusnet@hickorytech.net

  14. 14 Maureen

I am about to adopt a 5 month old puggat from a shelter. I noticed that your puggat is 20 pounds. Has he stopped growing? Also, have you ever had problems with Roogy barking. The puggat I am looking at (Apollo) has never barked when I was there and am wondering if puggats don’t bark very much. I am at a loss because there aren’t really any websited or other ways to get information on them.

    THanks :)

  15. 15 Becky

    Maureen,

I can honestly say we have not had any problems with our puggat barking. Of course, he does bark a couple times on occasion, like if someone comes to the door, but he doesn’t bark for no reason like some dogs like to do. I personally can’t stand dogs that bark, and am happy to see that our puggat doesn’t have that problem. Of course, each dog is different too. Roogy is about 6 months old now, and it seems as if he is done growing. He weighs just over 20 pounds now. They are nice sized dogs. I hope that this helps you make your decision. We have had a great experience with our dog so far, and I would recommend a puggat to anyone. Good luck in deciding! Thanks for checking out our site!

  16. 16 Maureen

Thank you so much for the information. I have another question for you. WOuld a puggat do ok in a 2 bedroom apartment? I can walk him twice a day, but I want to make sure that he can be happy in that environment. The humane society called me today and approved the adoption of Apollo but my ultimate concern is Apollo’s happiness. So can puggats be an apartment dog?

    Maureen

  17. 17 becky

I would say that a puggat should do fine in an apartment setting. Matt and I’s house isn’t huge by any means, but that doesn’t seem to bother our dog. I think a puggat could be happy just about anywhere, as long as you are giving them the attention they need. I am a full-time college student and Matt is gone at work most of the day, so our puggat has to spend some time alone in his kennel every day, and he is fine as long as he has water and a toy with him. So if you like the dog and seriously want to get it, don’t let the size of your apartment stop you. They are great little friends!

  18. 18 Kati

I have many pictures of our puggat. Is there a way to post them on this site? She is very miscevious and is always looking for a way to get into something she knows she shouldn’t be playing with. THe pictures I have are a great example. Please let me know.

  19. 19 Liz

I have had my puggat “Daisy” since she was about 6 weeks old. She is now 1 year and 8 months old. She is the best little doggy ever. I have 4 little kids under the age of 7, 4 dogs and 2 cats. She loves everybody. If anyone has any questions about her, I would be happy to respond with both her good and not so good habits! :)

  20. 20 Ravee

    HEY!!!
I am actually buying a puggat tomorrow…He is 4months and is SOOO hyper… i can’t control him… Any suggestions of him??? Is there anything i should look out for this particular breed???
    Thanks!

  21. 21 Becky

    Ravee,

We haven’t had much of a problem with our puggat being overly-hyper. It could just be the age that the dog is. Our puggat can get really excited when someone comes to the door and he goes crazy, but he isn’t like that all the time. If you haven’t spent much time around the puggat you are getting, you may just be seeing one side of it. It may not turn out to be so hyper afterall. But if all else fails, Matt and I have found that our dog really likes chasing a laser pointer, and it is a good way to wear him out. :) Good luck with you puggat!

  22. 22 Ravee

Thank You SOO much Becky… The laser pointer works like a charm
I also have another question… what is the best way to deal with puggats urinating when they get excited?? or will it eventually stop as the puppy grows older?
thanks for your time Becky!! I’ll post pictures of my pup asap

  23. 23 Becky

We have had the same problem with our dog on a few rare occasions. He gets really excited when my mother-in-law comes over, and a few times he hasn\’t been able to contain himself. Luckily he was outside each time it happened. However, I think it has been a couple months since he\’s done that, so I am starting to think they may grow out of it. Our puggat is just a few months older than yours, and we are learning as we go along just like you will. So I guess all I can say is good luck and let me know what happens! :) Thanks for stopping by again! Oh, and if you want a picture of your pup put on the website, you\’ll have to email it to us for us to post for you. brauchtalk @ gmail DOT com

  24. 24 Matt

    Ravee,
I always try and take him outside as often as I can. I do take him out before we know a visitor is coming over. He sometimes manages to still dribble a bit on my Mom or Sister. Roogy also urinates when I am disciplining him. He rolls on his side and then dribbles a bit on himself.

Puggats are awesome dogs! We totally love having one and I would recommend them to anybody! Good luck with yours!

  25. 25 Ravee

Thanks Matt… I hear as the pup gets older, he’ll learn to control it…So hopefully it won’t be much longer till this problem phases itself out. I see its impossible to prevent puppys from having accidents here and there, so i bought a bissell spotbot. This makes my life SOOO much easier and by it self does a 10x better job than i ever could cleaning up an urine…
    Thanks for the advice
    And have a Wonderful Christmas
    Sincerely
    Ravee

  26. 26 Michelle

I also have two puggats, Spike is more like a pug while Peanut behaves more like a rat terrier. They are five months old. Spike has suddenly started having problems with his back legs. My best friend also has a puggat from the same litter who has had some of the same problems. Have you heard of any other puggats having any similar problems?

  27. 27 Valerie

Just wanted to update you. Harley is now a few weeks from being 6 months old. I’d say he is around 20 lbs. now. I have noticed a little bit of an underbit. He is full of energy, sometimes hard to keep up with. Problem I’m having now, is the male harmones are flowing. Wants to mark everything. Especially when he is in a part of the house that he does not go into very often. I’m hoping once I have him spade that this will stop. Also wants to (in a polite way) get very friendly with your arm or leg. Anybody else having this problem or suggestions? This is new to me, and I have had a few male dogs which included a male rottweiler that was not spade and I did not have any of these problems. Harley does Like to sit in my lap but he sure does not like to be picked up. It’s funny, he looks like a plane taking off when you pick him up. All four go straight out. Really like the fact that he does not bark much. Every once in awhile a uff (and that’s about how it sounds) comes out of him. I have more of a whinner.

  28. 28 Brege

My boyfriend surprised me with the best Christmas gift ever….a Puggat. Tootsie sounds just like your Roogy. Potty training was been tough because when I got her we had a terrible wind storm which cut off our power for a week. With the power out and it being winter she got pneumonia. We took her to the vet got lots of meds for her, just to find out she might have had kennel cough or something like that before we got her. She is 100% better and FULL of energy and spirit. She goes to the door if she needs to go “potty” and if she gets in trouble we put her in a kennel for “time out”. She loves our 2 cats which didn’t like her a first but now accepting her as a part of the family. Toots loves to wear clothes and long car rides. Thanks for writing about your dog, I am glad puggat are becoming more popular.
    Brege

  29. 29 Elizabeth

Brege just a little tip from my trainer. Discipline is great but don’t make the kennel a “bad” Place to go. The kennel is suppose to be a safe and liked place to go. They suggested just like a kid to have a “time-out” spot, like a cushion or bed outside the kennel. It is hard at first but my puggats respond well even to just a harsh voice. And RAvee I have 2 puggats and the one was very hyper and the other was the cuddler. Just playing fetch and long walks would poop him out, he will get a little better but he still needs the daily walk. The dog whisperer always says first discipline, then excercise then affection. And I try my best to do this but when it is winter it is harder to get outside. But they can get just as tired just doing training tricks inside. Lastly, Maureen I had my puggats ONE bedroom and they were fine, again just daily excercise is needed. They are small so a walk in the morning and at night for at least 20 minutes was good. Best of luck to all!

  30. 30 Ray

We have a Puggat, Rudy. He is a little over 2 1/2. We have had him for almost 2years. He was a rescue. The first year of his life he had two previous owners. We don’t know why he didn’t fit in but have learn and now have some ideas. ENERGY is probably the main reason. We are very happy to have Rudy, he is a wonderful dog. Rudy is 30 lbs and just looks like a miniture boxer. He had his tail bobbed and was neautered when we got him. He loves walks, riding in cars, playing with other dogs and being around people. He is not to hot on baths and dosn’t like to swim in our pool. I can get him to go in only if I am in at the same time. Rudy has developed an allergy and his skin has a tendacy to develope a rash. So we keep him on medication to keep it under control. It has taken some time to control all the energy, but he finally knows he is not the boss. I would not recommend a Puggat for anyone who did not have the time to give the animal. Rudy isn’t a lap dog but he loves to be sleep next to us on the couch. As others have said, he loves sleeping in the bed, if fact he loves to get under the covers and sleep against us. I’m sure we spoil him but we are happy to have RUDY.

  31. 31 Valerie

Just want to make a correction to my last reply. Harley is a male and I will have him neutered. Sorry, I said spade.

  32. 32 Elizabeth

Hey Ray my more hyper puggat also has a problem with the skin rashes and I just use a medocated shampoo on him every now and then

    Matt and Becky~

Thank you so much for creating this website!!! When I purchased Mafia almost 3 years ago, there was NO information on them at all…so I had to do research on both pugs AND rat terriers. (Which is always a wise thing to do anyway, since you’ll see/know both tempraments).

I noticed you said you had issues with Roogy shedding. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop from season to season from what I’ve seen. My lint trap is always full when I do laundry…and it’s Mafie hair!!! This is only Maf tho…Roogy may only seasonally shed, but you’re right…bathing helps tremendously.

You’re lucky yours likes to bathe. Mafie won’t even go outside if it’s raining! HATES the water!!!

Another thing I’ve noticed with him that I’ve never noticed with any (of my) other dogs…anal sacks. I had no idea that’s what that smell was until the vet had to draw his blood for tests and HOO! It’s awful. So if you think it’s only bad gas…nope. Poor guy has “butt bags” as my daughter calls ‘em!

In response to another poster about his dog being “amorous”….Mafie is too and we’d like to breed him so neutering isn’t an option right now. I know it sounds awful but we actually buy him “hump” toys that are big enough for him and aren’t filled with beads. They will tear them up and those little beads aren’t good for them. Again, it sounds awful but it helps with the whole breeding concept AND it keeps your arms and legs safe!

I could brag on this guy all day, (as I’m sure most others can!), but I’ll end this by saying that Mafia by far and away has been the best dog I’ve ever owned and truly worth every penny we paid for him. I wouldn’t take a million dollars for him and that’s no joke!!! He’s behaved, lovable, fun and just the light of my life!!! I love him dearly.

If you all have any questions for me, I’d be happy to give you insight!!!

    Jeanne

  34. 34 Jacquie

I love my puggat named Fizzy *AkA* Fizgig. He is so playful and fun. He’s kinda in a biting stage because his teeth are coming in But still a joy! He’s 12 weeks old and the lady I bought him from has 1 more I think…if someone would like one I think they’re 200. My email is vision4soulsg7@aol.com if you’ll drop me a line. Thanks!

  35. 35 Carla

I have a puggat puppy named Mazie. You are right, there is hardly any information on them anywhere. Mazie is 6 months old and already weighs 16 pounds. We got Mazie for free, the lady didn’t want her or her brothers anymore, it was sad. I wish I could have taken them all!

  36. 36 Kamaria

I wish I had a puggat. I looked at many websites and didnt find any info on them. Then I saw what you wrote about one and Im very intrested in getting one. I wonder what breeding one would be like. Well thank you soooo much.

  37. 37 Anjaylah

We accidently found a Puggat. We were walking through PetSmart yesterday to get some cat food. When they had this little dog up for adoption from the human society. He was so cute. By bpyfriend said, I don’t know. (After our pug past 2 years ago, it has been hard to replace him). We left the store and 2 hours later he siad, let’s go get him.

They said they though he was pug and possibly a rat terrier. After looking at pictures on the internet, he has to be a Puggat.

Everything you have described on this website describes him PERFECTLY.

No even 24 hours now and he responds to his name and acts as if he has lived here his whole life. I have never been impressed with a dog like this. Maybe it is him, maybe the breed, but he ROCKS!

However, he does not have a tail or any trace of a tail. No nub or anything. Has anyone else heard of a dog born without a tail?

  38. 38 Michelle

Hey, I just saw the picture of your puppy, and let me add it is adorable. If anyone has a picture of a grown puggat I would be very grateful to see it. The only “grown up” picture that I saw was a picture of the puggle that is on the all breed info website, and the dog looks completely different than the puppy. I have a little puggat too, but it is 4 months and it is much different although it resembles the little pugget that that dog used to look like. My little guy is so cute, and I cannot believe it can change to look so much different. And lets say that I am not happy about that. I understant that the appearance of a dog changes as it grows, but I can’t believe that It will grow up to look so different. A little scary. It makes me sad that I have not seen this picture before I bought my dog, but on the other hand I cannot believe he will be so much different, and cannot stop loving him otherwise. If anyone has a picture of a grown puggat, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Love to all doggy owners

  39. 39 Matt and Becky

    Michelle~

I have several pictures of Mafie that I’d love to share with you! He’s 3-1/2 now and as another poster stated, my Puggat looks like a miniture boxer.

If you’d like me to email them to you, just post thru this site!

Let me just add, Puggats really do get more handsome the older they get. Puggat puppies are absolutely adorable!

Congratulations on your new addition. As you can tell by this website alone, we ALL love our Puggats and can’t imagine our lives without them. If you don’t feel that way yet, you will in no time!

  40. 40 Jeanne

    woops….sorry.

  41. 41 ashely

i have a puggat her name is lucy and she is the sweetest thing in the world!

  42. 42 Michelle

This is Michelle… Don’t get me wrong i absolutely LOVE my puggat. I can’t stand to be away from him, and he is getting more handsome by the minute. He is starting to look like a boxer, and everyone thinks he is one. Boxers are cute. My friend has one, and enjoys him a great deal. Well… I love my puggat even more. He is so great, but he constantly changes. I guess my home has done him good, because he doesnt look like he did when I brought him from the store (where he was sick). He grew a lot, and although his weight did not change a lot (maybe around 2 lb) he looks like a handsome young man… not a baby anymore. I think we will have some problems with him, keeping his doggy mating habits down, because he is so young and we have already seen him in “action”. He will most likely be neutered. What are the experiences regarding this issue with other MALE puggat owners? To anyone who has puggat pictures, my email is just post “puggat pictures” in the subject bar. If anyone wants I can post my baby’s pictutes (I really have a lot… my phone makes great pictures, and I constantly make candid pictures of Rocky… He plays with EVERYTHING but is also really good at listening to me. If I say no, he drops what he is doing and behaves well. All it takes is a firm no. On a walk if he picks up something that is not safe for him, I’ll just say no and he knows… He also knows how to get what he wants and it takes a lot of will from me to say no to those beautifull eyes, and “mommy please…” bark. To
all those who have been saying it’s irresponsible to inbreed dogs. Lets remember that dogs are dogs. It is irresponsible to breed dogs for pure profit, but saying mixed breeds are worse than purebreeds is not fair. People are not judged this way. Why should dogs be? I have had mutts all my life, and have great experiences with them. Rocky is so smart, beautifull, and his pleading look, bark, or whine makes me melt.

  43. 43 Michelle

To all those who want to see his pictures. Rocky is posted on http://www.photobucket.com under the username TuniaJ, or the following direct links:

He is now 4 months old and weighs somewhere around 9 pounds.

    Love to all!

  44. 44 Jeanne

    Michelle~

Rocky is sooooooo cute!!! I wonder if he’s done growing because from the pictures, he looks like he’s going to be tall.

My puggat is an adult male and I’ll tell ya…they are amorous little critters. He’s not obnoxious about it; meaning, he doesn’t try to mount the mailman or anything but he does get “fussy” when he’s….in the mood, so to speak. Like I posted up there, we just buy him big, stuffed animals to “practice” on. It’s awful, I know, but again, I would like to breed him so I haven’t had him neutered yet. (The best ones I’ve found you can get at Walgreens for about $20 and they’re washable!)

I realize some may look at that as irresponsible pet ownership but we love him so much, we want to always have a part of him in our lives through his children and grandchildren.

Thank you all so much for sharing your pictures of your babies! I love seeing the different faces and reading about their different personalities!

Jeanne, you said you wonder if he’s done growing. I was told by one of the vets he saw, that he wont be a big dog. 20lb’s at most. I don’t really believe that but we’ll see I guess. What do you think? What did u have in mind? I don’t think hes supposed to stop growing at this point, at only 4 months although I was told (by the same vet) that he will not grow much past 6months. I’ve only had him a month, but he has gained around 3lb (all muscle, not much in height) I don’t really know how big he will get. He’s still small for now. I’m going to another vet any day now, so I’ll c what he has to say. He was sick when I bought him, so they (petstore) made me go to their vet. But now Im going to my own. Hope he will be ok.

    Hugs and Kisses

  46. 46 Jeanne

Aww, Michelle, he was sick? What did he have? I hope he’s feeling better!

Mafie didn’t stop growing until around 1 year, and since I didn’t get to see his mom, (rat terrier), or his dad, (pug), I wasn’t quite sure HOW big he’d get. Due to different sizes in the rat terriers, they can’t be registered by the AKC from what I’ve heard, so I wasn’t sure if he’d be small or tall. Thankfully, he’s a medium sized puggat.

Over the next few months with Rocky, you’ll notice that he’ll probably start filling out in the chest, neck and hind quarters to more resemble a pug. His legs look really long and lean, that’s why I wondered if he was done growing. He may not get much taller but he’ll get fuller.

I keep reading how “smart” their puggats are and I’m a little jealous. (hehe) Maf’s not dumb but he has the attention span of a tic-tac and he’s very stubborn. (Pug personality in action). Other than that, he’s alot of fun! He definitely dances to his own drummer on his own terms!

I hope Rocky gets a clean bill of health so you can stop worrying and continue spoiling him rotten!

  47. 47 Michelle

We went to the vet with Rocky today, and he is doing fine. He is all healthy and should be from now on. He was so afraid of the doctor. He cried, and pulled his paws out to me! Finally the vet gave up and gave him to me… lol… He said that Rocky will not get big, due to his small size now (and long legs) and he will only be in his low teens (read 14-17lb.) I’m not sure though. He is only 4mo and is already 10lb. He did say that he won’t get much bigger, and another vet (as I mentioned before) already said that too. I really don’t care. He was so cute! He barked at all the dogs, to show them who is boss… Well he is a pussy cat in warriors skin, because he only barks when he is scared. He wakes me up in the mornining now to go outside. He sits by my bed and lets out one bark. And I know it’s time to go wake up and go outside. At least I get some exercise.

I will be adding more pictures on the following link. Today I am posting Rocky’s visit to the vet. Be sure to check our website out from time to time. Love to all!

I just got a Puggat a few weeks ago. I saved him from going to the shelter. What a wonderful suprise he is! He is very smart, affectionate and humerus. I already have a Min. Schnauzer/Boxer mix and my little puggat, Tanner has endeared himself to Pepsi. He responds greatly to praise and back rubs and has in such a short time fit right into our family. Some of his favorite things to do is to sit on my son’s lap while he is at the computer, ride inside my jacket to take the boys to school and sleep snuggled up to his big sister Pepsi. I would recommend Puggats to everyone. I have taken him to work to meet everyone and he is wanted by all.

  49. 49 Michelle

Aww… Laura Tanner is such a cute name! I know how you feel. My Rocky today for example refused to get out of my sight, and forced me to study for a test with him in my lap. (Grrrr…) I have also taken him to work, and everyone says he is the cutest. Last time I posted his picture he was around 10lbs at 4 months… Well he just turned 5 months and already weighs around 15lbs… Go figure. He is still just as cute and cuddly as the day I got him. Love to all Puggat lovers.

  50. 50 Laura

Thanks Michelle,………Tanner is so very enjoyable and smart. He is now 4 mos. and doesn’t even weigh 5 lbs yet…and he loves to go wherever I go. He is a mini rat terrier/pug and I don’t expect him to get very big at all. Pepsi is about 25 lbs and next to him she is huge. But she loves him as much as I do and really appreciates the company and playmate.
I took him to a friend’s house for the second time and he felt very much at home. Memory like an elephant. haha

  51. 51 Michelle

Well Rocky is now about 15lbs at 5mos he doesn’t look big though. I think he needs a diet. When I bought him at 3-4months he was around 6. He grew a lot, in muscle and is very built, but I think he might be eating a little too well and needs a controled diet. Today he was cold after his walk and he decided he was one of us, and went under the covers in our bed. You could only see his nose! I try to discourage behaviors such as this so he would know his place, and recognize I am the leader… but it’s very hard, when he’s so cute. It is nice that Tanner has a playmate and Pepsi has a little brother. Sending love to all dog lovers, big or small and in between.

I know what you mean. Poor Tanner’s feet get so cold outside, so being a devoted mom that I am, I bought him some shoes…..OMG it took 5 minutes to get on one….so I took them back. I have come up with a design that my friend and I are going to try. If it works out…I will let you know. Pepsi and Tanner both sleep with me, my boyfriend works nights and I love the company. Tanner also goes out with me riding inside my coat. He loves it there and just snuggles up and sleeps…he is sooo cute. We all have our positions for watching tv, Pepsi snuggles up against the side of my leg and Tanner either takes the lap or nestles in behind Pepsi’s butt next to me. Love is Grand! Happiness to all dog lovers.

I recently bought a Puggat and he is the sweetest thing ever! My parents have a pug and I can definitely see the similarities in their personalities. I have only had Ottus for about 2 weeks and he has already completley stolen my heart.

  55. 55 Michelle...

Oh, yeah Rocky has my heart up his sleeve… he is 18 pounds and has recently stopped growing(Mostly ..at six months) He is lean, but definetely has pug qualities. Love to Otto and all puggats. Merry Christmas!

  56. 56 Michelle

To all of you puggat owners, you have always been very helpful to me. I thus have a question. How much does your puggat shed in the winter season. I have just started to have a huge problem with Rockys shedding. I actually take a lint roller and take fur off of him before it gets on my clothes and get off about five to eight sheets at any given time. I would normally visit a vet with him, but I think my vet thinks I have a obsessive disorder about my dog because I visit him anytime I am concerned about anything. So before I go… I wanted to hear about any other puggat owners experiences with shedding. Is it a seasonal thing? How long does it last… I have bought him vitamins and a “shiny coat” food supplement, and I hope it will help. I have also bought the shed-ender brushing tool which I will use once or twice a week outside. Please tell me what you do to keep your doggies fur nice and preety. To all interested I have posted some new funny Rocky pictures on the link above. Thanx to all, and a happy new year.

  57. 57 Anjaylah

My Puggat seems to shed all of the time. I have found a few ways to make it tolerable.

    1. I feed him Bill-Jac dog food. You can find it at PetSmart. I have tried giving him other foods, but this stuff makes his coat shiny and his stools smaller, firmer, and less frequent. Anything else and his coat goes to crap!

    2. I take him twice a year (along with my cat) to the groomers to get the Furminator shed-less treatment. Each time is around $35.

    3. A bath once a month with special shampoo. I cannot remember what it is, but it is for dandrift.

    4. A grood rubbing outside, up and down his coat with my fingers once a week.

He still sheds, but it is very tolerable and his fur coat is so shiny and soft - he smells good too!

  58. 58 Jeanne

(I must try that dog food, Anjaylah!

Again, Mafia sheds throughout all the seasons but I DO notice a HUGE difference when he’s stressed out.

My family moves alot due to my husband’s job so anytime Maf sees tubs coming in, (like when I unpacked Christmas decorations then packed them again), I notice a whole lot more hair everywhere. Also, when I have to take my Cocker Spaniel to the groomers, Mafie totally stresses about that.

There is a shampoo that makes for less shedding but I haven’t found this to work at all. The best thing that I’ve noticed to do is to keep our schedule as calm as possible. It doesn’t stop the shedding but it does help! I just try not to do anything too out of the ordinary. I also rub Bounce sheets across my furniture during times where he seems to shed more. It picks up the hair and leaves the living room smelling wonderful, so…

I wouldn’t worry too much about this common problem. Unless you think he’s overly anxious and should be on medication, shedding is really just a nuisance for we mere mortals. Again, pay attention to the environment for now to see if there’s something “new” that he’s adjusting to but unless there’s an obvious rash, I wouldn’t take him to see his vet for his shedding. If he’s itching alot, has a rash AND losing hair, then I’d get him in but other than that, it’s just another day in the life of your beloved Puggat!

  59. 59 Cheryl

You Guys are all too cute!

I went with my adult daughter to buy her first puppy (Aada Mae) two years ago about now because she was lonely. She was the runt Puggat of the batch - they called them rugrats.

Well, she is just like my daughter was as a child, a bundle of energy. My daughter was a nervous wreck and kept bringing her to my house for several days at a time because she couldn’t handle it and wanted me to take her - then she would come back a few days later and say “I miss her so much”. Anyway I became very attached to her during these visits (she drives our older big dogs crazy). Now I can’t wait to dog sit her and every time she leaves I miss her for weeks on end and want to get my own.

All the things you all say about this breed are so true, smart, energy, snuggle when tired out, like to crawl into your bed and of course make you fall in love with them.

By the way, Aada Mae is now about 18 lbs and is a happy member of a family with my daughter, her fiancĂ© and his son Austin. She is a joy to all and I can’t wait for my next visit from Aada Mae.

Thanks for this outlet; hopefully it will quell my puppy fever for a bit longer.

Does anyone have any experience and advice with these puppies and older dogs and advice on having just one versus two to keep each other company? We have always had 2 at a time to keep each other company and they do become inseparable. Our dogs are getting older and one will probably go to heaven in the next year or so. There not to playful anymore and I miss that.

    Thanks again, Cheryl

  60. 60 Dylan

From everyones posts i think this is the perfect dog for me. They only problem is i cannot find them ANYWHERE. Does anyone know where i can get one?

    thanks

  61. 61 Michelle

    Where are you located?

You could try shelters, some petshops (where I got mine) but it is not easy since the puggat is not as popular as the puggle. I love the puat though because he is skinnier, is so alive, “talks” to me, makes funny sounds and faces throws his own ball (and catches it) etc…
He learns and adapts by himself. I cannot express how different he is from any other dog I ever had. I had doubts, but they all melted away. As for finding one, try calling local pet shops. Good Luck.

  62. 62 Cheryl

There is one in MN - They fly away tho. Where do you live? Another Idea is to go online to the major newspapers of each state. That is where I saw one puggat last week and I am assuming it is from the place in Watkins MN I mentioned above. I think it is called The Amazing Animal Farm. However, I looked high and low on the internet to find a listing for them and could not.

Maybe the pup is still there if you look up the Mpls Star & Tribune for last sunday. However, you then have to hassel with shipping if you do not live here.

BUT, they may know of other Puggat breeders in your area. Just an idea or two for you.

P.S. My husband says no more dogs until one of our’s goes to doggie heaven. My daughter said REALLY MOM! - and then said I could dog sit anytime I want - she loves Ada to pieces but a break is very nice once in awhile as she still has so much energy at 2.

    Take care and good luck,

    Cheryl

I have 2 year old Puggat named Lola Coconut and she is the cutest thing:) We live in MN and there is a breader here, in fact Cheryl, I used to work with someone who had a puggat named Aada and is why we got Lola because they were so cute. Lola sheds a ton too, has the cutest underbite, and is the cuddliest dog I have been around. We are so happ to have her and love her tons. I will say, everytime we go to the vet they tell us she is over weight, we have gotten her down to about 15ibs but are working to get her down another 1-2 lbs as the vet sas that is where they would like to see her. All in all she is a wonderful dog! Email me for a link to where to find puggats in MN if anyone is looking!

  64. 64 Puppy Websites

I didn’t know much about Puggats before I found your site, so thanks for sharing the information! It sounds like you have a wonderful companion in Roogy - he would be very happy to hear your report!

We will have had our Puggat for 2 years in July. Milo (from Milo & Otis movie, he is the twin)
Has been very good w/ our kids and all other dogs he has come across. And is a great walking partner. He has a great temperment and just the right amount of energy to keep up w/ my 11 year old son. He is a great companion. He has an extreme underbite, is this very common or very rare?

  66. 66 Michelle

Hi Amy! My puggat has an underbite too. I’m not sure that I can call it extreme but it is there. I am guessing thats common with pugs, and pug mixes. I have found my beloved puggat to be very gentle and loving creature too. He is about 25 pounds now, he guards the house, barks only when he hears a nois outside, and loves to wake me up with wet kisses. I have some adorable new pictures on my website.

To all who wonder if a puggat is the dog for them puggats are:

    1. Very loving
    2. Well mannered
    3. Don’t bark a lot (at least mine)
    4. Relatively small (good for apt.)
    5. Can be stubborn.
    6. Cute!

  67. 67 Sherry

    Hello,

I was wondering what Puggat puppies sell for?

    Thanks!

  68. 68 Michelle

Depends on the area… They might be hard to find. My husband bought ours in a local pet store for $600.00 but you might find one at around $400 to $700. Puggats are so smart. (I guess all dogs are with the right training). My baby learns tricks so fast (ussualy around a couple of minutes of repeating) He finds his toys, he knows the name of each one, and if I say bring the ball her brings the ball, or bear, or bone etc… He rolls over, barks on command, sits (of course), gives paw and many more. He learned most of these comments in a couple of minutes and some by himself while playing. I really hope you can find one..

    Good luck!

    Michelle

Hi, I have been waiting for my dog to have her puggats, WOW! She had 10, and I’m so glad they are SO cute!!!!!

  70. 70 Jennifer

Hi, I just got a puggat. Can someone send me pictures of their adult puggat? I just saw some scary pictures of an adult one and I’m not sure if mine will end up looking like that.

  71. 71 Michelle

Good puppy choice! I had the same problem, after viewing the websites but don’t worry my doggie is adorable. One of the cutest dogs I have ever seen. My dog’s website is

Thanks so much Michelle! I’ll be posting pictures of my Ginger soon =)

Ginger is such a cute name! I always post new pictures so check back if you want to see more pictures of Rocky all grown up! And I’ll tell you he didnt change a lot on his “face” just grew more, so your puggat is sure to be as cute as she is now! I really think Rocky is the most handsome dog I have ever had, and I love him so much! I am happy for you, and enjoy your new precious baby!

  76. 76 Jennifer

Hey Michelle, I wanted to show you the pictures the breeder had of Ginger. She is so cute! Do you think she will look like your dog? Do they get darker as they get older? You said Roogy is 25 lbs now right? The breeder said she is supposed to be from 8-15 lbs. Does this sound right? Anyway let me know what you think :)

    http://s306.photobucket.com/albums/nn260/jenniferp88/?albumview=link&special_track=nav_album_album

  77. 77 Michelle

Well I was also told by the breeder that he would be up to 15-20 pounds too, but he grew up to about 25 pounds. I don’t think Ginger will be 8-10 pounds. Somewhere from 15-20 depending on her parents should be more like it. Don’t worry, she will still not be a big dog. (The size of a pug) I will post some new (grown up) pictures for you on the link that is in one of my posts above. As to your questions about the color… he did get darker as his fur grew out. Ginger to me has more pug qualities than Rocky which is always cute. Rocky has a longer “nose” but otherwise they are very similar, and no matter how Ginger will look, I know you will love her the same. Puggats have a personality so similar to us people that theyre very hard not to love.

Be sure to check out some of my new pictures :)

  78. 78 Jennifer

Aww your dog is gorgeous!!! He looks like he is so much fun! I hope Ginger ends up looking similar to him because he is so cute. Your adult pictures made me so happy. Thank you!!!

  79. 79 Michelle

P.S. To allll who want to see Rockys “big boy” (adult) pictures they are the ones with the green collar (for know.. until he ruins it) :) Happy we made you happy Jennifer, because he is adorable and so will Ginger be…

It’s been a while. Harley is now going on 2 years old. He weighs 21 lbs. After I had him fixed last summer, he calmed down quite a bit. He has turned out to be the best thing I have ever done. My husband and I disagreed on getting another dog, but I just went for it and I am so glad I did. Harley is very smart, and he knows when he is doing something he shouldn’t be. He was very easy to potty and crate train. He does not stay in his crate anymore. I leave him out during the day and I’ve not had any problems with him chewing anything up. Very demanding of my attention. If I’m in the room and trying to read the paper, he either jumps right in the middle of it, or scratches at my leg until I put the paper down and up in my lap he comes. One strange quirk he has is since day one I brought him home he will not go up and down steps. If its just one step up, no problem, but will not go up and down stairs. I’ve tried. Glad to see pictures of other puggat. Would have 2 or 3 more if I could!

We have Puggat puppies for sale. They were born on June 5th. We only 4 left that don’t have a home to go to yet. 3 females & 1 male. We’re asking $200, which will include dewclaw removal, deworming, & first shots. They’ll be available August 1st. If anyone is interested, send us an email at ozzsr@yahoo.com and we’d be happy to send pics.

Jennifer~ Our little Lola Coconut is 2.5 and is the sweetest thing. We too were told she would be 10-14lbs, she is more like 17-18, we have always been told she is overweight. In fact, she has been on weight management food since before she was 1. She was darker in color when we first got her but really lightened up. She def looks more pug and I agree her “face” didn’t change much. My husband and I constantly say she is just as cute as the day we got her. She continues to be the cutest dog we have ever seen. We are constantly stopped on the street with people saying what a cute puppy, and they are so surprised when we tell them she is not a puppy. Have fun with you new Puggat they are the best dogs.

  83. 83 mathew

I have a 5 month old male puggat (rugrat). He looks a little different than the others I have seen, he actually could blend in with a litter of boxer puppies if seen with them. You need to look hard just to tell his mom was a pug.

Your description of your Roogy is almost dead on for my Sidd. He’s a ball of energy, loves to sit in my lap, and loves to take naps. The friendliest dog I have ever met or had too. He doesn’t bark, but he does whine if I leave the house. I hope this ends soon enough so that he isn’t so sad when I am gone. The only thing I think I need to add is my Sidd is a tremendous chewer. He will eat through a bone for a much larger dog in a matter of hours. Mine also has an extreme underbite which only adds to his unique personality.

I definitely made the right choice when I got him, he matches my lifestyle and personality perfectly.

  84. 84 mathew

We also have a unique story of how we met.

I used to work 20miles away from my house but changed jobs a few months ago and now work a nice two miles away. So I started thinking about getting a dog. I knew that I wanted a boxer, but I don’t have a fenced in backyard so I wasn’t sure if I wanted him to locked up during the day. I kept looking around, checking out boxer rescue missions and even visited a few pounds. I couldn’t find any boxers that weren’t horribly sick (boxers tend to have Cancer issues).

Meanwhile I would visit the locally owned pet store and buy Koi/Catfish for my pond. Every weekend I would go to buy feeder fish for my catfish and I would see a little dog in the kennel at the store. I inquired about him in the beginning because he looked so much like a boxer. His price was very higher at $800 and I kept telling myself I wanted to adopt rather than purchase. Soon it got to the point where I would come and visit this Rug Rat (puggat) on the weekends. No one purchased him for two months. Two weeks ago I went in one last time and he was still in there, just waiting to play and I got him at a much better price than he used to be listed at.

So I named him Siddhartha, aka Sidd. The premise of Siddhartha, the novel by Herman Hesse about Buddha, is that good things come for those who wait. They certainly did for both of us.

hello everyone! i have a puggat he’s name is tyler he just turned 3yrs old this month. he’s about 30-32 lbs. he’s so adorable…..he has a lot of energy when he gets excited, he’s protective which i hate sometimes because i live in the building on the first floor so everytime the main door opens or some people talking at the hallway he barks at lot, but he is friendly for some reason he knows my neighbors and don’t bark at them when they enter the building. he loves kids. he sheds a lot (that’s my big problem). he loves to sit on my lap. he’s smart and knows some words like “come here, stop and get out”. he knows where to get the water from my water cooler and knows actually how to run the water and drink (so i clean the faucet everyday) he’s potty trained which amazes me because i work 12.5 hours, he knows when i get home i will take him out for potty. there are times he gets an accident in my apartment (only few times) but he does it in the bathroom, my bathroom door doesn’t completely lock so i know he pushes the door to open because i shut all the doors before i leave for work. i think my dog is becoming lazy as he gets older he sleeps a lot i don’t know if it’s because i got him fixed when he was a year old, he’s very calm right now. he also loves it when i bathe him he will not move in the tub thus enjoying the water. my only problem is he never wants walk outside no matter how hard i try he drags me back to my apartment after potty and i used to push him to walk but i feel bad because he is so stubborn that he gets choked with his collar until his eyes turn red. all in all i’m very happy with my dog he’s the love of my life i made a right choice the first time i saw him at the pet store i already fell inlove with him he was such a cute puppy…. he’s cuter now actually he’s chunky and fluffy. i had his pictures posted on dogbreedinfo.com/puggat 3 years ago when i was trying to research on puggats (it’s still there on the website but he’s a lot bigger now)

She hates water of any kind. All other dogs she will yip at. When someone unfamiliar is in our house Cocoa goes crazy. Cocoa is very smart so when you dont pay attention to her she will go to the bathroom in my bedroom. SHe knows when she is guilty and will go right in her cage. when we first got cocoa she new her name with in 8 hours and knew that she should go potty outside. we are now currently trying to find a mate for her. So if you want to mate with cocoa please send an email. we live in Illinois. I am so happy we got cocoa she is definitly the best dog i ever had!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a “Puggat” named Chyna and she is the best dog I’ve ever had.
She was an “oops” between a Rat Terrier male and a Pug female and I had no idea that people bred this mix for money (though I’m not surprised.) I just get really annoyed when people refer to them as a “breed”, like some of you have. They are “mutts.”
I am not trying to sound “holier than thou” but I think that people should stop and think before they consider paying for a “designer dog”, such as a Puggat. You are only encouraging puppy mills and by buying them, you are actually SUPPORTING them. Aren’t there enough homeless dogs in the world that you can adopt?
I paid $50 for Chyna and her owner only charged me that much to ensure that she was going to a good home. She has since had her Pug spayed.
Please stop and think about the real bottom line before you run out and buy a designer dog. That’s all I’m asking.

    To Lindy Lou…
Bravo to you for adopting your Puggat! : )

    To Gabbi…
Shame on you for even thinking of breeding your dog. What do you hope to get out of it? Money?? If not, then what?

Just the fact that Lindy Lou found her Puggat at a shelter should tell you SOMETHING.
Maybe you should take some time out to go visit a kill shelter before you decide you want to bring even more dogs into this world.

I would really like to thank Becky for starting this place.
When I first got my puggat, the pound kept him for a few days to do his neutering and place a chip in him. I had a few days to check out the web and found this place. After reading these testaments, I was very excited to get him back. He is very smart and learns very fast.
He is 3 months old and has learned to play fetch and to kennel up. I’m still teaching him to walk on a lease. He will follow better if not on one.
Check out my pics I have new ones added.

I have one, Olive. She’s about maybe 7months old. A co-worker of mine, his mother just happend to have a pug and a rat terrier, and an ‘oops’. So thats where I got mine. She’s black and white. Very protective, I mean really. omg. But i adore her. She’s my first dog I’ve got living on my own. Very protective about people coming into my apartment, but not bigger dogs, only dogs about her size. My sister brought her pug, Harley, over and she fliped out. But she doesn’t mind my blue heeler, Emily, though she picks on my lil’ Olive. But anyways. She’s prolly the best dog I could have ever hoped for, i love her to death.

She doesn’t really like to play. Sometimes, she’s in the mood. But she’ll just mostly just play on her own, so no fetch or anything like that. She’ll just chew on plushie toys, so no hard toys also. And she has gotten about 20 paitrs of socks and chewed through miles on underwear. She loves to give kissies, haha. And gets super excited when I come home, and humps everywhere. I can walk her without a leash now, and she goes nuts in the yard outside. She basicly runs in circles, and she runs really fast.

She doesn’t like baths. Well she can tollerate them. And as for cutting of the nails. I don’t do it. I just let the groomer’s do it. Haha. Suckers. But anyways. She’s prolly one of the greatest dogs I could have ever hoped to get and is perfect for apartment living.

Here’s a picture of her at about 7 months old. I guess. I’m not really too sure how old she was. I’m just assuming from what he told me.

This is a cool dog. Crystal is now 12 weeks old and we got her at 8 weeks. It’s funny reading your comments about Roogy. It’s as if we are reading comments about our own crystal. Thank you for this thread.
